Pi Day

March 14, 2016

Pi Day is a nationally recognized date celebrating mathematics and the history of the mathematical term pi.   Pi Day is observed and celebrated in many fun ways worldwide.  Pi, which is commonly represented as 3.14, is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.  Pi Day was founded by Larrry Shaw, a physicist at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, in 1988 and is celebrated on March 14th of each year, due to the digits of the date being the same as the approximation of pi, 3.14.  Celebrations include activities such as pie eating, pie throwing, and in-depth conversations about pi.  (Wee Wisdom votes for “pie-eating!”  How often can you make an educational association with an event as fun as eating pie!)
